Breathing is the vital function for maintenance of life. It is thought by many cultures that the process of breathing is the essence of being. Post-operative breathing exercises are a part of these exercises and it plays a very crucial role in improving the pulmonary functioning and reducing post-operative pulmonary complications.
Post-operative breathing exercises helps in improving respiratory functions and energy levels throughout the day. Post-operative breathing exercises such as diaphragmatic breathing are used in order to augment diaphragmatic descent while Inhalation and diaphragmatic ascent while expiration.
Patient may deficits in understanding the importance of breathing exercise through the absence of education and limited knowledge. By providing adequate education nurse can enhance patient participation in exercise intervention. Thus knowledge of breathing exercises must for nursing health personal.
1. To assess knowledge regarding post- operative breathing exercises among nursing students.
2. To find the effectiveness of planned teaching program regarding post-operative breathing exercises among nursing students.
3. To find the association of knowledge regarding post- operative breathing exercises with the selected demographic variable.
A Pre Experimental study was adopted to find the effectiveness of planned teaching program regarding post-operative breathing exercises among nursing students and to find the association of knowledge regarding post-operative breathing exercises with the selected demographic variable. The study was conducted
on 40 samples of B.Sc Nursing students. Randomized sampling technique is used to select the sample by inclusion and exclusion criteria. Analysis and interpretation of data was done with the objectives by using descriptive and inferential statistics like chi square test etc.
Fig 1-Depicts that according to the pre-test knowledge score, 3% The nursing students is having very good knowledge, 42% is having good knowledge, 42% is having average knowledge and13% is having poor knowledge.

CONCLUSION: |
|
In this study, it is found that the pre- test score is low in comparison to post test score of students. The planned |
|
teaching programme was found effective and there is no |
|
Association between knowledge and demographic variables. |
After teaching programme (post-test) out of 40 students 3 students (8%) have scored 25 and above, 5 (12%) have scored between 20 – 24(very good), 20 students have scored between 15- 19 (good) and no student have scored 10 and below (poor) hence planned teaching programme was found effective in enhancing the knowledge of nursing students regarding post-operative breathing exercises. It was found that there is no association between knowledge and demographic variables.
Fig -1-Pie chart depicts the level of knowledge
AMONG NURSING STUDENTS:
Fig 2- Represents that, out of 40 nursing students no. of the students (0%) have scored above 25 i.e. excellent, 1(3%) student have scored between 20 24 marks (very
good), 17 (42%) have scored between 11- 14(average)
and 5 students (13%) have scored 10 and below(poor) before implementation of teaching programme (pretest).
However after teaching programme (post -test) out of 40 students 3(8%) have scored 25 and above, 5 (12%) have scored between 20 – 24(very good), 20 students have scored between 15- 19 (good) and no student have scored 10 and below (poor)
Figure 2– Comparison of pre-test and post –test knowledge score knowledge score
In this study pre-test results depicted that 0 (0%) students had excellent knowledge regarding post- operative breathing exercises, 1(3%) students had very good knowledge, 17(42%) students had good knowledge, 17 (42%) students had average knowledge and 5(13%) students had poor knowledge.
The finding of the study has implications in various areas of nursing mainly nursing practice, nursing education, nursing administration and nursing research.
